Hezbollah was started in response to the Israeli invasion and occupation of southern Lebanon that lasted from 1982 until 2000. Most people believed Israel could not be beaten -- that it would just take what it wanted and we couldn't do anything to stop it. But Hezbollah continued its resistance until Israel left most of Lebanon. Of course, Israel didn't give back everything it stole. They kept the Shebaa Farms and even kept Lebanese prisoners inside Israel illegally.

Imagine -- a military invades your country and kidnaps you, isolating you from family and country for years. When Hezbollah captured two Israeli soldiers recently, it was because Israel had continually refused to release prisoners that were kidnapped from Lebanon.

In response, Israel waged a war against the people of Lebanon, killing more than 1,000 people, causing $7 billion in damage, displacing close to a million people and preventing those in need from getting food or medical supplies.

Aerial bombardment is a technique that targets civilians. Cluster bombs are weapons that target civilians. Destroying bridges, ambulances, milk factories, grain silos and churches are all tactics that directly target civilians. Israel is clearly targeting civilians.

Hezbollah killed 104 soldiers and 53 civilians, but Israel killed more than 90 percent civilians. If you look at these numbers, it appears that Hezbollah took more care than Israel in preventing civilian casualties.

The United States and Israel have made war on weaker countries to protect their "interests," meaning their control over natural resources like oil.

If Palestinians want freedom or if Lebanese want to be safe in their own neighborhoods, that might not be in the "interests" of American and Israeli leaders.

Those who strive for independence, and freedom, will inevitably resist those powerful countries "protecting their interests." This resistance is justified.
