Book Summary & Reviews of Books

Bluegrass

Few titles are published in the True Crime every year but new voices are rare. Anyone who cares about the genre has to wonder when the next Ted Olsen or Darcy O'Brien or Shana Alexander is going to arrive. Or wonder is they'll ever arrive at all. A new voice has arrived with Bluegrass.

No Room for Doubt

Angela Dove's debut book NO ROOM FOR DOUBT is a true story of how "one violent moment can changes lives--forever." If one expected Dove's first book to be a humorous jaunt, one would be mistaken, even though Dove has been writing humor columns for six years. Yet, when Jacque MacDonald asked Dove to write the story of her daughter's murder and the hunt for her murderer, Dove took on this task knowing that what she may find could forever alter the relationship she has with her family, most particularly with her Father, Harold Whitlock.

Our Little Secret

I read this book in a day, and I never do that!

I followed this case a little, but had no idea so much other stuff went on...who knew there was a serial killer in New Hampshire in the 60's? I thought this was just about high school kids who killed a man and almost got away with it.

Man o' War

While this book will be compared to Lauren Hillenbrand's Seabiscuit, probably to its detriment, it is exciting in its own way. Seabiscuit told a rags-to-riches story. Man O'War's story was a riches-to-riches tale and so lacks some of the suspense.

Citation

Even if you've never visted a racetrack, stood by the rail near the wire and experienced those beautiful Thoroughbreds thunder down the homestretch, feeling the wind in your hair as they flash past you...you'll feel as if you have, once you read Phil Georgeff's "Citation, In A Class by Himself!"

Cigar

I am happy to report that the writer for this book is in the same league as the horse he's writing about. The result? A thoroughly enjoyable story of how Cigar, the charismatic son of Palace Music and Solar Slew, carved a name for himself in racing history and in the process became the sweetheart of the sports world.

Three Strides Before the Wire

I read this book not long after reading Laura Hillenbrand's Seabiscuit, and at first it seemed that the author intended to give Charismatic's story the same treatment. Not so--if you are looking for an inspirational story, this book is NOT for you.

Nixonland The Rise of a President and the Fracturing of America

nixonlandPerlstein is a scion of the 60s. Through reading a lot of newspapers and mining a lot of television, he has constructed an imaginary world called Nixonland. Nixonland, like Hobbitland, exists in the mind of the fabulist. Perlstein has also reconstructed, in this same manner, many of the events of the 50s and 60s in fascinating and often compelling narrative detail. As a popular history of these times, Nixonland is an exciting and sometimes fresh read.
