This review was right-on. I definitely suggest reading the book over watching the movie. Just keep in mind that certain parts of the story have been disputed as to their accuracy in the life of real geishas. - Holly

The review was pretty good. I haven't watched the movie, but I am pretty eager to do so now, despite the film's shortcomings as expressed above (about which I am not surprised anyway). And by the way, Chiyo's elder sister's name was Satsu and not Tanaka. - Suchaita

The book is an excellent novel, but not completely accurate. One of the author's main sources for the book wrote a different book herself entitled 'Geisha, A Life' (US version) or 'Geisha of Gion' (UK version). I recommend reading it, and maybe a few others, to give you a better idea of the history. - Silverwind

I agree that Ziyi was a poor actress. She lacked the subtlety and natural shyness of Sayuri, but everyone else did a good job. I would also advocate reading the book than watching the film. The book is really good, and I was really fooled into thinking that the book was a real biography, so imagined my suprise at the discovery that the author was male ;D - Alv
