This book says that if one follows one’s heart and strives to makes his dreams come true then ‘ the whole universe will conspire to make it happen’. Man is a slave of habit. Thinking about a problem from different viewpoints brings a whole new gamut of solutions, giving the problem an entirely new dimension. To put it another way, every problem is an opportunity in disguise. When one is faced with such an opportunity, he should capitalize on it and hence make the most of it. This is another thought that is endorsed by the book. The gist of the story is this. A shepherd Santiago sets out to make his dream a reality. He faces many difficulties on the way, loses all his money and is forced to work in a shop, which is making loss. He however, because of his fresh, new ideas gives the shop a new look and the shopkeeper a new life. He then goes on to cross the desert, where he meets an alchemist, who leads him to the pyramids. The books takes us through the difficulties during the course of his journey and how he overcomes them all by listening to his heart and to the language of the world, thus making the book an interesting read! One may dream of being a president of the Philippines, others dream of being as rich as Bill Gates, while some dream of being the next big thing in the television. Yet one must realize that not all dreams become reality. Oftentimes, our dreams turn to failure. In spite of that, the key to success is the continuous belief in our capacity to achieve our dream. Despite many obstacles faced, one must still hold on to his dreams. For only God knows what destiny lies. God has entitled each one of us a purpose in this gigantic planet called Earth. Only through believing and following our dreams may we reach success and survive.

Its an amaazing book guys, even if hv got it for your homework and ya im talking to you "I hate the book" and "bitchs". I got it as my summer homework n its simply amazing.... chasing ur dreams... so inspirational, id love if people studied this keeping in mind their own lives and imagining themselves in place of Santiago!!!! It'll simply be wonderful..
This book is great. I would definitly tell everyone about it. It's actually great to know that people like Vaya is willing to say that it is amazing. I didn't read this book by choice, I had to read it for my english class. But I can say thanks to my teacher now because it teaches me to think about life and what I want in life.
Amazing... if you want to add meaning in your life, you can start by reading this book.
I chose this book on my own for my book review for school

Ppl tend to glorify things they don't understand. And this book is yet another classic example of the same. Take Einstein. How many ppl actually understand what E=mc2 is all abt. And yet they idolize him. That's the way it is. If it was so easy to inspire yourself by just reading a book ,there would have been millions of successful self-realized individuals courtesy alchemist n all. But that's not the case. That boy actually converts himself to wind,talks to the desert, the wind,the sun and what not!!! What did that mean??? So,go ahead with the book if you hv nothing else more productive to do. Because the book is crap.Yeah, crap it is.

once there was a book called the alchemist it made people like us want to die after reading
theres a movie called burn after reading i believe it was based on someone who read this crap!!!!! life is a bitch and this book will not give you inspiration his little philosophical catchphrases are gaylord!!!
universe conspires to help the one who follows the heart, but doing such things in society would still gain problems.i dont find this to be practical life principle.
