At approximately 0330GMT NetWatch towers noticed several domains not functioning (including our own, apologies for the interruption). Intruige struck and we dug amongst the routers and web consoles to find the fault, assuming some minor fault with the network. Neh, it was far more surprising. We reckon GoDaddy was down for approximately 5 minutes, both its DNS service for it's customers, and it's corporate web site. One would assume this includes the SecureServer and WildWildWest brands associated with the domain giant suffered similar consequences. That's about as much as we know, but speculation can be fun. A quick hunt through the records over at NetCraft suggest that GoDaddy has made a New Year's resolution to upgrade to Windows Server 2003 - sightings have slowly crept up since January 1st. Vocal consumers are concerned that GoDaddy has spent too much on inappropriate marketing (see any recent news story) by spending $2.4M on a SuperBowl commercial, instead of pumping that cash into providing a better service. Whatever is happening, this new marketing strategy and an unexpected switch in operating systems suggests GoDaddy has a new burst of enthusiasm to increase subscribers. I'm not sure where that will leave the company and it's current user base though. Trackback(0)
